If your clothes catch fire, quick and correct action can prevent serious burns and save your life. The “Stop, Drop, and Roll” method is a proven emergency technique used worldwide.
When to Act
- Your clothing or body is on fire
- You feel heat, see flames, or smell burning fabric
- You cannot immediately remove the burning clothing
Steps to Follow
1. Stop
Do not run. Running can intensify the flames due to increased oxygen flow. Freeze in place.
2. Drop
Quickly get down to the ground and lie flat. Cover your face with your hands to protect your eyes and airway.
3. Roll
Roll back and forth on the ground until the flames are completely extinguished. Focus on smothering the fire by removing its oxygen supply.
4. Call for Help
While rolling or immediately afterward, shout loudly for help to alert others nearby.
5. Seek Medical Attention
Even if the flames are extinguished, seek immediate medical care to assess and treat any burns or smoke inhalation.
Important Note
If another person catches fire, help them to stop, drop, and roll, or use a heavy blanket or jacket to smother the flames - never use water if the fire was caused by oil or electrical sources.
