Earthquakes can occur suddenly and without warning. Taking immediate protective action during the shaking can reduce injuries and save lives. Knowing what to do in those critical moments is essential.
When to Act
- You feel sudden, intense shaking or vibration
- Objects begin to fall, rattle, or move uncontrollably
- Alarms or alerts signal seismic activity in your area
Steps to Stay Safe During an Earthquake
1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On
Drop to the ground immediately to prevent being knocked over. Take cover under a sturdy table, desk, or other stable furniture. Hold on to it until the shaking stops. If there is no cover available, crouch down, cover your head and neck with your arms, and take shelter near an interior wall away from windows.
2. Stay Indoors and Away from Hazards
Do not run outside during the shaking. Stay away from glass, windows, mirrors, outside doors and walls, and any objects that could fall—such as ceiling fans, light fixtures, or tall furniture.
3. Wait Until the Shaking Stops
Remain in your protected position until all movement has ceased. Be prepared for aftershocks, which may follow the initial quake.
4. Exit Safely After the Earthquake
When it is safe, carefully leave the building. Avoid elevators and watch out for structural damage, fallen wires, or debris.
Important Note
If you are outside, move to an open area away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. If driving, stop safely and stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.
