Section 182 of BNS: Preventing Deceptive Documents Resembling Currency

Section 182 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) applies when a person makes, uses, or delivers a document that resembles a currency note or bank note so closely that it can deceive or mislead others into believing it is genuine.

This section ensures that documents resembling official currency are not used to cause confusion or commit fraud.

Punishment:
Whoever makes or uses documents resembling currency notes or bank notes shall be punished with a fine of up to ₹300.

If a person refuses to disclose the name and address of the person who printed or made such a document, they shall be punished with a fine of up to ₹600.

Presumption of Responsibility:
If the name of a person appears on the document, it is presumed that they caused it to be made, unless proven otherwise.

How It Protects:
This section prevents counterfeit-like documents from being created or distributed, ensuring that public trust in genuine currency is maintained.

It also ensures that those involved in making such deceptive documents are held accountable.

Example:
If a person prints a flyer resembling a ₹500 note to deceive others, they are guilty under this section.

Similarly, if someone distributes a promotional document designed to look like a bank note, it is punishable.
