Section 304 of BNS: Combating the Crime of Snatching

Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) defines snatching as a form of theft where the offender, in order to commit theft, suddenly, quickly, or forcibly seizes, secures, grabs, or takes away movable property from any person or their possession. This section addresses theft committed through swift or forceful action, ensuring offenders face strict consequences for depriving others of their belongings.

Punishment:
Whoever commits snatching shall be: Punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to a fine.

How It Protects:
Section 304 protects individuals by addressing the unique nature of snatching crimes. By enforcing clear and strict punishments, this law deters offenders and safeguards public property rights, ensuring the safety and security of individuals in public spaces.

Example:
If a person grabs a purse from someone’s hand and runs away, or snatches a mobile phone while someone is using it, they can be prosecuted under this section. Similarly, forcibly taking a wallet from someone’s pocket is also considered snatching under this law.
