Section 153 of BNS: Preventing Unlawful Acts of War Against Friendly Nations

Section 153 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) applies when a person engages in, attempts to, or encourages war against a foreign state that is at peace with the Government of India.

This section ensures that Indian citizens do not engage in hostilities that could endanger India’s diplomatic relations with other countries.

Punishment:
Whoever commits this offense shall be punished with imprisonment for life, along with a fine.

Alternatively, the punishment may extend to seven years of imprisonment, along with a fine, or a fine alone.

How It Protects:
This section ensures that India’s foreign relations remain stable by preventing individuals from engaging in unauthorized acts of war against friendly nations.

It reinforces national security and diplomatic integrity.

Example:
If a person joins or funds an armed group to attack a foreign country that has peaceful ties with India, they are guilty under this section.

Similarly, if someone publicly encourages war against a friendly nation, they can be prosecuted.
