Section 270 of BNS: Preventing Acts of Public Nuisance

Section 270 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) defines public nuisance as an act or illegal omission that causes injury, danger, or annoyance to the public or to people living nearby.

This includes any action that obstructs public rights or endangers public safety, health, or convenience, even if it offers some temporary advantage or convenience to others.

Punishment:
Whoever commits public nuisance shall be punished with imprisonment of up to six months, or with a fine, or both, depending on the severity of the act and its consequences.

How It Protects:
This section ensures public safety and convenience by discouraging acts that harm or disrupt public peace and order.

It holds individuals accountable for negligent actions that affect public spaces, health, and safety.

Example:
If a person blocks a public road without authorization, creates excessive noise, or stores hazardous materials in a public area, they are guilty of public nuisance.

Similarly, polluting a public water source or obstructing a public pathway falls under this offense.
