Do we need to pay any amount to cremation ground employee or authority to make correction in cremation slip?

I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against the staff and authorized personnel at the Madanpur Khadar Cremation Ground, Delhi, regarding a distressing and inappropriate incident that occurred today, April 17, 2025.

I had visited the cremation ground to request a correction on a previously issued cremation slip. The correction I needed was related to the age mentioned on the slip. The original slip incorrectly stated 39 years, whereas the correct age, as per my father’s Voter ID card, is 59 years as of the date of death (October 10, 2024). I submitted a copy of his voter card as valid proof for the correction.

Despite having proper documentation, the employee on duty demanded ₹500, claiming it was a “government order” to charge for any correction. When I asked him to show any official government notification or circular, he was unable to provide any such document.

Instead of providing assistance, the employee refused to correct the slip and threatened to tear my original cremation slip. He also stated that approaching police or higher authorities would not change his stance.

Given that this correction was mandatory for applying for the death certificate, and I had no alternative, I proceeded to make the online payment under compulsion. A screenshot of the payment is attached with this complaint.

Eventually, a corrected slip was issued after payment. I have attached both the original cremation slip (with incorrect age) and the corrected slip as evidence, along with supporting documents.

This experience was not only unprofessional but also deeply upsetting during a time of personal loss. Such conduct is unacceptable from staff at a public facility meant to serve grieving families with dignity and compassion.

I respectfully request the following:

  1. Conduct a formal inquiry to identify the staff member involved.
  2. Verify whether any official directive exists regarding the ₹500 charge. If none exists, take appropriate disciplinary action for the demand of unauthorized payments and use of threats.
  3. Ensure the public is made aware of the actual process and charges (if any) for such corrections.
  4. Take firm steps to prevent such misuse of power and unethical practices at all MCD-run cremation grounds.

I am willing to provide any further information or statement as needed. I request your urgent attention and support in addressing this matter.

Sincerely,
Pratap Bairagi
