Important Announcement from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
“TRAI never sends any messages or calls for verification/disconnection of mobile numbers/reporting illegal activities. Beware of such messages/calls coming in the name of TRAI. Any call or message claiming to be from TRAI should be treated as potentially fraudulent”
TRAI has received reports of fraudulent calls and messages being circulated in its name. These scammers are posing as TRAI officials and threatening to disconnect mobile numbers or alleging illegal activities associated with the recipient’s mobile number.
TRAI wants to clarify that it never initiates communications regarding mobile number disconnection through messages or official notices. TRAI has also not authorized any third-party agency to contact customers for such purposes.
Please be cautious of any calls or messages claiming to be from TRAI. Here are some red flags to watch out for:
- Threats of mobile number disconnection: If you receive a message or call threatening to disconnect your mobile number, it is likely a scam. TRAI does not disconnect mobile numbers directly.
- Allegations of illegal activity: Scammers may falsely claim that your mobile number has been used for illegal activities. This is a tactic to scare you into revealing personal information or making payments.
- Pressure to take immediate action: Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency by pressuring you to act immediately. They may ask you to click on a link, call a phone number, or provide personal information.
If you receive a suspicious call or message claiming to be from TRAI, please do the following:
- Do not respond to the call or message.
- Do not click on any links in the message.
- Do not provide any personal information.
- Report the call or message to TRAI.
You can report fraudulent calls and messages to TRAI in the following ways:
- Visit the TRAI website: https://trai.gov.in/
- Send an SMS to TRAI: 1909 with the message “FRAUD” followed by the details of the call or message.
It can also be reported to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or Cyber Crime Helpline Number (1930).
Stay safe and be vigilant!
Please share this message with your friends and family to help raise awareness about this scam.
Thank you.
