Cafe owner's plea against religious discrimination and police harassment - Demand for justice from Jaipur

I, Jatin Nagwani, am the owner of a small café named “ChaiGuy” located in Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur. I am writing this letter to register a serious complaint regarding ongoing harassment, discrimination, and unfair treatment from local police personnel, especially in collaboration with nearby café owners who appear to have an understanding with them.

Over the past several weeks, local police officers have repeatedly disrupted my business by forcefully removing customers and creating a fearful atmosphere around my café. While I strive to run an honest, peaceful business, nearby cafés that operate till late night and even sell cigarettes face no such interference. It is common knowledge that they allegedly pay regular bribes or “hafta” to avoid police action. This points clearly to targeted harassment.

Despite my efforts to approach SHO Dharm Singh at Adarsh Nagar police station, no corrective measures have been taken. Instead, it appears that even the SHO is complicit or turning a blind eye to the situation.

Moreover, I suspect that religious discrimination is a key factor in this behavior. Many of my customers belong to the Muslim community, and I have noticed clear discomfort and targeted actions by the police against them. As a law-abiding business owner, I cannot and do not discriminate based on religion or caste, but the police seem to take issue with that.

The emotional and mental toll of this continuous pressure has been immense. I am deeply disturbed and even had thoughts of self-harm due to the injustice and helplessness I feel. I am simply trying to earn a living through honest means, yet I am being cornered and victimized.

I urge the Complaint Hub and appropriate authorities to:

  1. Launch an impartial investigation into the role of SHO Dharm Singh and other police officials of Adarsh Nagar Police Station.

  2. Identify and address the nexus between police and select cafés operating in violation of laws.

  3. Ensure that police action is lawful, unbiased, and does not target citizens or businesses based on their religion.

  4. Provide me protection from further harassment and allow me to run my café peacefully.

I have documented this pattern of abuse and am ready to provide any supporting evidence needed. Please treat this matter as urgent and take immediate steps to ensure justice.

Sincerely, Jatin Nagwani
